Three Jolly Pigeons 6/9/12 Brooklyn, New York

Photobucket

The Yeggs got to play on the same bill as Black Death and Baby Daddy Project "Let It Be That" (The Let It Be album in its entirety) at Bay Ridge's Three Jolly Pigeons and I got to see some old friends of mine as well, Sweethook was in attendance too. We played a tight set loosely and Jazelyn helped us out with backing vocals on "Another Brooklyn". Premiered tonight was the Stevie Ray Vaughan classic "Texas Flood" to which afterwards John the Bass Player yelled to Thomas "Your saving that for the Yeggs !!!" referring to the tasty 16 bar Blues guitar solo Thomas took.

One of the things our rehearsal space is known for is the authentic railroad tie which we use to keep the bass drum sedentary and that is also quite heavy. Thomas forgot to bring the dumbbells along (the metal "weight" kind) so we transported the "tie" on the roof of Thomas' car, Fortunately and Luckily no one got hurt and I am referring to the other cars and innocent bystanders.

Previous to the gig Joe, Marco and myself stopped off a few doors down at Panchos for some authentic mexican food. I chose from the extensive menu and after asking Joe what a "Carnita" was (spanish for Pork) decided on Tostadas (2 for $6.00) one Carnitas (Pork), one Tinga (Spicy chicken) and a Lime Jarritos Soda. I Absolutely Loved the first Tostada (we think it was the Tinga but not sure) which had just the right hint of Cilantro and was piled high with ingredients atop a most durable and crunchy Tostada but there was something I didn't care about in the meat on the second one, it was kind of sticky and that reminds me a little of Pork Chops so I am assuming that was the Carnita. Either way I could eat here every day of the week.

Recording Session 3/30/12 HesDeadJimStudios - Queens, New York

Photobucket

The Good Yeggs had a great day recording some tracks for fun, demo purposes, posterity and our forthcoming CD. As opposed to going the Phil Spector route of 300 takes before rolling (Hard Drive) tape we make it pretty easy to please and so long as we are all happy with our performances technically with a hint of "producing" from Thomas then its on to the next step. Recorded this afternoon was "Me & My Monster" which only needs some guitar, keyboard and vocal overdubs to completion and Basic Tracks for "I'm Coming Back"(including Bongoes), The Foundations Classic "Build Me Up Buttercup" and "Heartache By The Numbers" the Ray Price standard, Thunder Tube was also overdubbed onto "Bad Things".

I had mentioned to Joe on the way over that I hadn't eaten yet and wanted to stop for a snack so while Thomas was getting Drum mic levels Joe decided to make the first Beer run and asked if I wanted a sandwich I replied "Sure, Surprise me" and Surprise me he did with Ham & Swiss on a Roll with Lettuce, Tomato and Mayo. Nina agreed with me after the session that a sandwich never tastes so good as when someone else makes it for you.

Take 1 / Guitar Overdub / Punch - in "I'm Coming Back"

Take 1 / Lead Vocals / "Me & My Monster"

These vocals were not used as Joe felt they were a tad nasally. Take 2 nailed it.

Beefstock South/The Plastic Beef Variety Show - Freddy's Backroom 1/14/12 Brooklyn, New York

Photobucket

The Precursor to BEEFSTOCK 2012 was held at Freddy's by the band's with the band's and for the band's appearing this year of which the Good Yeggs will be amongst the roster.

The lineup tonight is below, we were running behind schedule as can be expected at these type of things.

6:30 - PLASTIC BEAST - (hand percussion welcome to sit in)
7:40 -
8:00 - BLACK DEATH w/THE BEER VAMPIRE
8:45 - NOHRMAL
8:50 - THE NOPAR KING w/LITTLE JOE IACONO
9:20 - POWER DROID
9:30 - SOLAR PUNCH
----- iNBAL
10:00 - ADMIRAL PORKBRAIN
10:35 - ERIC MATTINA
10:45 - THE GOOD YEGGS w/TOM ROBERTO
11:30 - THE BLOODY MUFFS
12:00 - THE BEAST
1:00 - OPEN BLUES JAM - (let me know in advance if interested)

Admiral Porkbrain came as a surprise to me being a Captain Beefheart tribute band amongst the proceedings, the opening song was "Moonlight On Vermont".

The Yegg's convened unto Freddy's just before 8 p.m. to check out Brian's Death Metal band BLACK DEATH and held a lengthy evening of wine, scotch, vodka, conversations about Gibson SG's, rolls, cough drops and chocolate covered cherries whilst careening in and out of the back room checking out all of the bands until our turn came. Aside from my count off to "Stranger Coming To Town" being 1-2-3-4 as opposed to the correct 1-2-3-4-2-2-3-4 we performed without incident or error and had a really good gig.

Thanks to Joe Cowell for emceeing our segment and Joseph Filosa for putting this all together.

Good Yegg's Press Release.

The Good Yeggs are back in Bay Ridge. On Saturday, December 3, 2011, 9:30 PM, The Good Yeggs will be playing a vibrant mixture of rock, blues, country, and original rock and roll at 3 Jolly Pigeons, located at 6802 3rd Ave, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

In response to the overall outcry from their last gig at 3 Jolly Pigeons back in January, 2011, a return trip to Bay Ridge-Brooklyn was a must. After careful negotiation and preparation, with intervention by Brian Dillon, the date of Saturday, December 3, 2011, was agreed upon.
Opening will be "The Subway Serenader and the International Silver String Subterranean Band". Comedic, TRaSH! blues, rock and roll, come and listen to the tails of the electric sewer, and the underground bowel movement.
The Subway Serenader was the seminal first act to perform at 3 Jolly Pigeons many years ago. Although not as angry as he was back then, Brian's act is still a frenzied and raucous set that is not for the faint of heart. On this night he will be backed up by The Good Yeggs.

Painting The Town Yegg

Photobucket

Tonight we did a Good thing as Yegg's and sallied forth to the hinterlands of Park Slope, Brooklyn to offer our wares and leave wake of our sound oscillations as captured via microphone to reproduce via plastic digital disc.

We dropped off our Demo CD at Two Boots Pizza and The Tea Lounge and it was nice to talk and snack (if thats a snack then whats for dinner ?) with my bandmates setting our eyes on booking some gigs for the fall.

Freddy's Backroom 8/6/11 Brooklyn, New York

Photobucket

It was an exciting evening for me to finally get a chance to perform with my band The Good Yegg's at the famed Brooklyn watering hole Freddy's in front of loved ones and peers. We played roughly a one hour set debuting the song "Bad Things" which is still getting its final touches in the recording studio but is also a totally fresh song for us that we are all excited about.

The Good Yegg's set climaxed with a performance of "700 Beers" in which John the Bass Player, Franklin and Mike Roberto were invited up to play their respective instruments while Thomas and Joe took over vocal duties. After that we were treated to some impromptu one liners from Mike that happens oftentimes when a live mic is left open with Mike in the room.

Recording Session 7/10/11 HesDeadJimStudios Queens, New York

Photobucket

The band reconvened to HesDeadJimStudios and recorded six tracks for upcoming release and we are very pleased with the results. Thomas has yet to record finalized Guitar/Keyboard tracks so there is more to come.

Stand - Out track of the day had to be "Bad Things" since the tune is only three days old to us keeping the arrangement super loose and down to instinct and feel, committed to hard drive by take two and I had a chance to overdub an "atmospheric" cymbal/mallets track for "spooky" mood. Thomas and myself had never even heard Joe's song for his father-in-law "Gentle Bill" and next thing we knew the rhythm track was recorded and we were in the isolation booth double tracking the "barroom singalong" chorus (as seen in the photo above).

"Let The Sun Go On" has been in the repertoire of late but Thomas had envisioned a "Double Drummer" sound for the recording requiring me to record myself over the existing Drum Track and mimic "ME" the best I can, so off I went into my headphone world and had a Blast that I really only could share with myself as it happened. On Playback the sound of two Drum Kits & sets of Hi-Hats just out of sync by a millisecond (well, in my case probably a Hundrasecond) sounds very Classic Spector/Visconti/George Martin to my ears and I cannot wait to hear final mix on this one. Tom had sent us an MP3 track via email that we were also three days new to and that was "Arent You Glad" which is indeed a Bouncy Song. "I'll Never Lie To You" has been a favorite to play for me the last two months or so and it was great to finally commit to a definitive recording.

We did record Loretta Lynn's "Have Mercy On Me Baby" and ironically this was the song that took us the most takes to capture but wound up being a "Live" number which did not adapt as well to the "studio version" as the other tunes did, I do look forward to playing this live though.

Joe and Thomas sound Musically astute and assured as ever on these recordings as we continue to grow as bandmates and musicians.

And Who Shall Cast The First YEGG !!! - The Tea Lounge 3/25/11 Brooklyn, New York

Photobucket

The Good Yeggs played their first full set proper at the Tea Lounge in Brooklyn where we had previously performed a few songs at the 52nd Annual Kings County All Stars Christmas Spectacular. Thomas' brother Michael sat in on the drums and Joe performed a spirited version of "Build me up buttercup" I am told.

Sabian AAXplosion Crash Cymbal Inquiry

Photobucket

To Customer Service Department

I am a loyal user of your quality cymbal products and a drummer for 29 years. Just recently I cracked an AAX X-plosion Crash Cymbal during a performance, my surprise lies in the fact that the cymbal in question is just over two years old. The cymbal is stored in a heavy duty cymbal bag and is handled carefully, I use them on the average of just twice a week equalling 200-300 hours over the course of two years, this has never happened before and I feel that the damage is premature especially for a high end AAX crash. My cymbal attack is medium and I am not a heavy player, I also use a medium gauge drumstick (pro mark 747). For such a highly reputable company I am hoping that you can help me replace this cymbal. I have shows booked and would appreciate a prompt reply.

Thanks Very Much
- Frank Genalo
(genalof@aol.com)

And the courteous and timely reply. (they replied the next morning)

Hi Frank,

Thank you for playing SABIAN.

I'm afraid that due to the fact that the cymbal is over 2 years old, I can't replace it under warranty.  In order to be fair and consistant to all of our customers our 2 year policy is strictly enforced.  We do, however, offer repair services for certain types of problems.  If you could tell me the location and lenght of the crack, there may be something we can do to help you.

Cheers

Kevin

The Good Yeggs - Three Jolly Pigeons 1/8/11 Brooklyn, New York

Photobucket

Our first full gig was a good time. Becker Brother Joe sat in on Sax and Jazelyn (Sweethook) helped us out on "American Crank". It was nice to use a vintage Slingerland kit accompanied by the DW snare drum and the mounted rack tom was mounted on a snare stand giving it that sweet spot. Thanks very much to Baby Daddy and Thomas for inviting us along. Songs premiered at this gig were "Come The Light Of Day", "Stranger Coming To Town" and our version's of "That's Alright Mama", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "I'm Only Sleeping"
